About
I'm Henry Ching.
I scaled a start-up to $200M and lived to tell about it.
Here’s my story.
My entrepreneurial roots were grown in the (thorny) garden of my family’s restaurant business. I watched my parents lose it all then, after some difficult and dramatic decisions (including shedding businesses) they rebounded, and flourished.
Their transformation taught me invaluable lessons about the power of resilience, foreshadowing the fortitude and foresight I’d need later in my own career.
Launching SimplyWireless.com was a dynamic entrepreneurial adventure that enjoyed 8 years of meteoric growth, and a sudden plunge toward potential bankruptcy. Just like my parents, we faced tough decisions including a LOT of operational pruning.
We restructured, cut away what wasn’t working, and rediscovered our true north. The result? We transformed our digital omnichannel business and expanded our retail presence to over 120 stores across 14 states, ultimately growing to over $200M in revenue with the help of over 700 employees.
My top 10 lessons from this entrepreneurial roller coaster ride?
- Delegation done right is really, really liberating.
- Be a continuous learner and master of your craft.
- Make sound decisions based on data, not emotion.
- Stay focused on what works, and stop what doesn’t.
- Hard work and determination aren’t enough to scale.
- Create an intentional culture that people can champion.
- Find smart leaders to run the business…then let them run.
- Be relentlessly enthusiastic and your team’s chief cheerleader.
- Focus on landing the big fish, and let someone else steer the boat.
- Never make decisions under fire. Breathe, then send the email tomorrow.
